Durable Timber for Coastal Playgrounds – Accoya Timber for Waka Playground

The Waka Playground at New Brighton is a landmark community project, inspired by waka (canoes) and the cultural heritage of Aotearoa. Designed to engage children and families with both play and storytelling, the project required timber that could withstand harsh coastal conditions while remaining safe, sustainable, and low-maintenance.

Accoya timber was the natural choice for this playground. Known for its unmatched durability and dimensional stability, Accoya ensures the playground structures will endure sea-spray, heavy use, and Christchurch’s variable climate — all while retaining its beauty for years to come.

Highlights

  • Durability in Coastal Environments: Accoya’s acetylation process provides Class 1 durability, perfect for exposed beachfront locations.
  • Low Maintenance: Resistant to swelling, shrinkage, and warping, reducing upkeep.
  • Sustainability: FSC® certified and non-toxic, making Accoya safe for children and environmentally responsible.
  • Design Flexibility: Easily shaped and finished to bring the waka-inspired forms to life.
