Crafting Timeless Design with ITI NZ’s Western Red Cedar

Designed by Studio2 Architect Paul Clarke, this Auckland residence is a striking example of how natural materials and creative expression can shape a home. Nestled on a private rear site, the residence blends art, storytelling, and architecture into a sanctuary for family life.

Central to the project’s aesthetic and performance is Western Red Cedar (WRC) supplied by ITI NZ. Selected for its timeless beauty, durability, and versatility, WRC allowed Clarke to create dramatic facades, intricate detailing, and warm interiors that highlight both craft and creativity. The cedar plays a vital role in the home’s symbolism and connection to nature, while also delivering long-term performance.

Highlights

  • Natural Beauty & Flexibility: Vertical and horizontal cedar cladding provides striking contrasts across the two pavilions, with operable shutters adding movement and adaptability.

  • Warm Interiors: Cedar ceilings and cabinetry, crafted from recycled cedar weatherboards, bring warmth and authenticity to the living spaces.
  • Sustainability & Protection: Treated with Dryden WoodOil (locally made for New Zealand conditions), the cedar will gracefully age while remaining protected against the elements.
  • Architectural Symbolism: The cedar pivot door with coloured glass inlays reflects Clarke’s design philosophy and the home’s theme of creativity.
